Schaumburg Choral Artists
Jennifer Whiting, Director

Our next auditions are Monday Aug 3 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. and Sun Aug 9 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m at the Al Larson Cultural Center.

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in joining Schaumburg Choral Artists! We are delighted that you are considering sharing your musical talents with us. Auditions are designed to be a relaxed, positive experience to help our director assess your vocal range and determine the best voice placement within the ensemble.

What to Prepare

Please come prepared with the following:

  • A short, prepared selection (or portion of a selection): Please prepare approximately one minute of an accompanied song that you feel comfortable singing and best showcases your voice. Folk songs, art songs, arias, and hymns are all appropriate choices. (Please do not prepare musical theater selections, pop songs, or a cappella pieces.) Memorization is optional.
  • Sheet music: Please bring a clean copy of your music in your preferred key for the accompanist. The music should be free of markings whenever possible.

The Audition Process

Your private audition will take approximately 10 minutes and will include the following:

  1. Brief introduction: A friendly conversation about your musical background and what interests you about singing with Schaumburg Choral Artists.
  2. Prepared selection: You will perform your prepared piece with our accompanist.
  3. Vocal exercises and range assessment: The director will guide you through several vocal exercises to determine your vocal range and comfortable tessitura.
  4. Sight-reading: A short melodic exercise to assess your music-reading skills.
  5. Vocal independence: You will be asked to sing a simple written harmony line while the pianist plays the other voice parts.
